Best Cordless Steam Iron UK

By  Enda McLarnon

Many users are making the switch from a regular steam iron to a cordless steam iron. These offer the user complete freedom with the iron as it is not attached to an electrical lead. Many electrical appliances are now moving from corded products to cordless products, and steam irons is certainly moving quickly in that direction.

Normally you find that cordless products are more expensive than a similar corded product. This is true when you compare a cordless steam iron to a regular steam iron. However, it is worth noting that the price differential is quite small, typically £5-£10 more expensive for the cordless option.

Buying Tips & Features to Look For

Before spending any of your hard earned cash, please read our buying tips below, as we know they will help you make a better buying decision in the end. Cordless irons have the same features as normal steam irons, other than the fact that they can be used as cordless.

These include water tank size which is usually between 260-400ml. They will also have basic features such as anti-drip, ceramic soleplates, constant steam, steam shots, etc.

They do however vary in price with an average price between £25-£40. The two main differences in these irons and traditional irons is that they are cordless so no annoying electrical lead.

Heating Time

They all use a charging station and two important thing to note here are:

  1. Heat up from Cold - the length of time from setting the iron on the base until it is ready to be used. This can vary between 25-45 seconds
  2. Recharge Heating Times - When you start to use the iron, you get 20-30 seconds of ironing time. After that the iron cools down and needs to be reheated by placing it back on the base. To get back to full heat is known as the recharging time. On average that is usually between 5-15 seconds. Some models may take slightly longer.

Steam Outputs

On all steam irons, including cordless models, there are two steam features to understand:

  • Continuous steam or constant steam is measured in grams per minute (g/min). This is the level of steam that comes out of your iron when you are ironing. This varies between 30-40g/min on most irons
  • The steam shot (burst or boost) is a more shot of powerful steam that helps deal with the tough creases or stubborn creases. This is normally used by pushing a button on the iron. This varies between 130-210 g/min depending on the model you own

Our Opinion: This is hard to beat in terms of value for money. The complaints are about having to return it to the charging unit to be charged. It really isn't that much different to putting the iron down, to adjust the garment. Once you get used to the way it works, which takes a couple of sessions, then it works really well. It's the same with all cordless irons. This model is a huge seller, gets consistently good reviews and about as cheap as you can find in the UK.

Our Opinion: In terms of power this Russell Hobbs model is one of the biggest in terms of wattage and steam output. Any real complaints about this model is that people expect the iron to stay hot for a long time. Cordless irons don't do that as you have to iron for about 20-30 seconds, recharge (heat up) for 15 and then iron again. It's more of a technique that you develop quickly. This model is at the high end of the price point but it is a more powerful cordless iron when compared to other models.

As shown on TV shopping channel, this one is known as the Phoenix Gold FreeFlight. Like all cordless irons this one also does vertical steam. It has a ceramic-coated soleplate with a precision tip.

The heat up time from cold in less than 30 seconds, and the reheat time, when placed back in the dock, is only 6 seconds. You can if you prefer use this while still attached to its dock, like a normal corded iron, for constant, non-stop steam power.

The Anti-Drip system stops stains from water droplets, and it also has Anti-Calc and Self-Clean functions help to eliminate lime scale build-up to prolong the life of the iron.

There's also an Auto-off safety setting for peace of mind, plus a 'Ready to Use' thermostat light indicator.

Our Opinion: In terms of power this JML model is standard when compared to other cordless options. The concerns are the lower steam rate and steam boost which will struggle with heavier creases, typically those you can get on denim jeans.

Tips for using a cordless steam iron

Patience - It takes a bit of time to get used to using these when you first start. Once the iron is removed from the base which has to be plugged in to an electric socket, the actual iron is disconnected from the electricity supply. The iron uses residual heat in the sole plate to create steam and smooth creases. It will cool down in around 20-30 seconds and needs to be recharged (heated up again.

Good habit - Try to get into the habit of placing the iron back on its base promptly after each ironing run.

Indicator lights - Most models have an indicator light that will illuminate and go out again once it has reached temperature. This can take around 15 seconds each time

Ironing time - The length of time the iron stays at best temperature depends on the material being ironed, the temperature setting selected and how often the steam shot button is used.

Large/Heavy fabric - If you have to iron large or heavy fabrics on a high temperature with frequent use of the steam shot, then we would recommend using it in corded mode (with the base locked to the hand unit)
