By  Carol

Many users are making the switch from a regular steam iron to a cordless steam iron. These offer the user complete freedom with the iron as it is not attached to an electrical lead. Many electrical appliances are now moving from corded products to cordless products, and steam irons is certainly moving quickly in that direction.

Normally you find that cordless products are more expensive than a similar corded product. This is true when you compare a cordless steam iron to a regular steam iron. However, it is worth noting that the price differential is quite small, typically £5-10 more expensive.

Cordless Steam Iron Buying Tips

Before spending any of your hard earned cash, please read our buying tips below, as we know they will help you make a better buying decision in the end. Cordless irons have the same features as normal steam irons, other than the fact that they can be used as cordless.

How do cordless steam irons actually work?

Cordless steam irons do not work the same as other cordless products which use a battery that can be recharged. It's really important to understand this. The iron sits on a charger that is plugged into the main electrical supply. You can then lift the iron off and use it cord free for about 30 seconds. Then you have to return it to the charger for about 15 seconds before using it again for another 30 seconds.

Some users who have made the change from a regular steam iron to a cordless steam iron initially find this process slightly irritating. Once they get used to it, then they really like using the iron.

Colour Choices

This is not a huge buying decision, but most cordless steam iron models will offer you a range of colour choices. Blue, grey and purple appear to be the most popular choices. If colour is important for you, then always check that before ordering as the colour usually has a separate item number.

Steam iron wattage

The wattage usually shown as something like 2400W determines how quickly the iron soleplate will heat up and also how fast the steam is produced. Most cordless irons have a wattage of between 2400-2800 watts. The higher the wattage the more expensive to run off your electricity bill.

Steam iron soleplates

Soleplates can be made of anodised aluminium, Titanium, stainless steel or ceramic. The most popular choice is Ceramic closely followed by stainless steel. Manufacturers have greatly improved soleplates over the years so as they no longer snag clothes. The small steam holes on the bottom of the soleplate allows the steam to get through to the clothes underneath the plate.

Steam iron water tank capacity

A typical water tank capacity for a steam iron is around 300-400 ml. A tank of this size lasts for around 20 minutes before it needs to be filled again. The larger the water tank the heavier the iron will be too hold.

Steam and steam boosts (bursts)

Steam production happens when the water in the tank gets boiled. Steam is what removes normal creases and wrinkles in clothes. The steam burst or boost is a more powerful steam that helps deal with the tough creases or stubborn creases.

Continuous steam or constant steam is measured in grams per minute (g/min) as is the steam boost. These values are usually around 30-40g/min for constant steam and 180-200 g/min for a steam burst.

Anti-Drip & Anti Calc Explained

The best cordless steam irons will have an anti-drip feature. They will also have some form of anti-calc system which helps prevent the build up of limescale, which is important in areas with hard water. Some models will also have a self-slushing or self-cleaning button for flushing out any build up of limescale.

Both Cordless and Corded

Some cordless irons can be used as corded or cordless. Some are only cordless so just be aware of that. If you quickly need to iron 1 or 2 items it is best to buy one that can be used in both ways.

Manufacturer Guarantees

Good well known household brands like Tower, Morphy Richards, Tefal, Philips, Russell Hobbs etc do make good quality irons. What you want is a good local UK customer service team who can be contacted. You also want a good guarantee and something like 2-3 years is what is on offer in the UK.

Most of these brands offer a 1 year guarantee, which you can extend by 1 or 2 years when you register your new steam iron online at the manufacturer website.

Our Opinion: This is hard to beat in terms of value for money. The complaints are about having to return it to the charging unit to be charged. Quality of Ironing

Lightweight

Our Opinion: In terms of power this Russell Hobbs model is one of the biggest in terms of wattage and steam output. Any real complaints about this model is that people expect the iron to stay hot for a long time. Cordless irons don't do that as you have to iron for about 20-30 seconds, recharge (heat up) for 15 and then iron again. It's more of a technique that you develop quickly. This model is at the high end of the price point but it is a more powerful cordless iron when compared to other models.

Value for Money

Ease of Use

Quality of Ironing

Lightweight

Our Opinion: The Swan brand has the name for good value budget products and that explains their lower price point when compared to other brands in the UK. We like that it can be used as a corded or cordless and also as a steam iron or as a dry iron with a water spray. It does heat up quickly as it has a high wattage and recharging is also fast when compared to other models.

Tips for using a cordless steam iron

Patience - It takes a bit of time to get used to using these when you first start. Once the iron is removed from the base which has to be plugged in to an electric socket, the actual iron is disconnected from the electricity supply. The iron uses residual heat in the sole plate to create steam and smooth creases. It will cool down in around 20-30 seconds and needs to be recharged (heated up again.

Good habit - Try to get into the habit of placing the iron back on its base promptly after each ironing run.

Indicator lights - Most models have an indicator light that will illuminate and go out again once it has reached temperature. This can take around 15 seconds each time

Ironing time - The length of time the iron stays at best temperature depends on the material being ironed, the temperature setting selected and how often the steam shot button is used.

Large/Heavy fabric = If you have to iron large or heavy fabrics on a high temperature with frequent use of the steam shot, then we would recommend using it in corded mode (with the base locked to the hand unit)
