Detailed Review of the 42221

This model would best be described as a really solid working iron. We should know that any steam generating iron will easily cut your ironing time in half and that is why we use them in the first place.

This one has a sensible price point and is from a well known and recognised brand.

Appearance & Quality

You can see from the image above that this is a good looking iron. That may not sound that important but some of them do look pretty bad. This one is a nice mix of tasteful blacks and greys and that gives it a certain quality look.

The iron appears to be well made and feels nice and light in the hand. That means it will not cause any aches and pains in the hands or arms which is always a good thing.

Water Tank Size

42221 controlsWhen these style of irons were first introduced the tank size was around a litre. In today’s market you can buy irons with a 2.2 litre tank so things have moved on quite a bit. For me this one has a tank that is a sensible size at 1.7 litres.

That means you will never have to make a load of trips back and forwards to the sink or taps.

More importantly it is removable and that makes filling it up a great deal easier. If you want to fill the tank up where it sits on your ironing board then you can do that as well. I just find it easier to bring it to the tap and fill it up. At least you have options with this one.

Amount of Steam

If you want to get creases out of clothes you need steam and you need plenty of it. This one produces steam in abundance and more than many of its rivals. I have found that this one produces more than enough steam even on the lowest setting. If nothing else that will help keep the electric bill down a bit.

Now because of the amount of steam this creates, that may mean that you have to fill your tank up more often, but with a 1.7 litre tank it really is not that big of a problem.

The steam that you get from this one easily deals with any creases including those stubborn ones you often get in jeans.

Cable Tidy

This one comes with a cable tidy which is handy when it comes to storage time. The length of the lead is also really good and will suit most homes.

Simple Controls

42221 controlsWith many of the irons that I have used and reviewed, you would honestly need a day’s training to understand the controls. You will not have that problem with the 42221 model as they are simple and easy to use.

Fits Normal Ironing Boards

Some of these generator irons are so large that you do need to buy a special ironing board. This model from Morphy Richards will fit your normal ironing board so there is no need to have to worry about changing that out.

Overall this is in my opinion a good middle of the range iron that works really well. It is at a price which I think is sensible, and although not cheap by any means, is priced at the right level. You are getting good value for money and a nice high quality product.

Other Reviews

As I mentioned earlier almost 600 people at various online websites have bought this product and taken the time to leave a review. The average rating is 76% which is a very good rating. The huge majority of people liked this iron when they had used it. Here is a typical review just to give you a feel for them:

Like most products some people did not like this product and I always like to find out why. In total there were 64 bad reviews out of 600 so about 11% of people complained. Their main complaint was that it started to spit water or stop working after a year.

Summary & Verdict

In my opinion this is a model that sells well and overall gets nice consistent reviews. It continues to be a strong seller for the Morphy Richards brand and when I see that the majority of buyers are happy enough, then that gives me some peace of mind.

This made it on to our top 10 list and it is a consistent best seller. It would be wrong for me to say how long this iron will last as I use a different model on a regular basis. Buyers though seem to like this one and it sells at a really good price.
